Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

The Treatment

A full Reiki treatment lasts just under an hour and the recipient remains fully clothed, it will even work through a plaster cast. It does not require any manipulation of tissue or muscle. The Reiki practitioner simply places his/her hands on or above the body, usually beginning at the head.

During a Reiki treatment it is not uncommon for the recipient to experience such sensations as warmth flowing from the practitioner's hands and most people report entering a very deep state of relaxation. Those who are familiar with meditation say they enter a deep meditative state, the mind calms the breathing slows down and they experience a feeling of well being.

A Reiki treatment treats the whole person including body, emotions and mind creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe therapy. It works in conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
